AI species identification is a technology that uses deep neural networks to automatically recognize and classify species from multimedia sources like images, sound recordings, radar data, or DNA. This approach allows for rapid identification of species at a scale and speed impossible for human taxonomic experts.
The technology can be used in multiple domains, including:
- Citizen science platforms
- Collection management in museums
- Biodiversity monitoring
- Environmental research
- Automated data processing from field sensors like wildlife cameras and sound recorders
Key challenges include:
- Class imbalance (some species have very few training images)
- Identifying rare taxa

Service
The AI Nature Identification service is a paid annual subscription service for organisations. The public identification endpoint is for testing purposes, free of charge but limited to 10 identification requests per day. The token identification endpoint is for our paid users. The annual subscription fee varies depending on the type of organisation, annual usage, and additional services such as customisation for adaptation to local species distribution and local taxonomy output.
For 2025, a basic subscription includes up to 100,000 requests per annum.
